Ma'an Site (Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit)

Era: Neolithic Age

Announcement Date: August 29, 1997

Located 1 km south of Siqiao Village, Ma'an Town, at Xianren Mountain and 500 meters south of Siqiao (Fenghuangdun). The site includes two areas: Xianren Mountain and Fenghuangdun. The Xianren Mountain site covers a total area of about 8,000 square meters. In 1985, partial excavations revealed deposits about 1 meter thick, divided into two cultural layers: the upper layer yielded sandy red pottery, stamped hard pottery shards, and stone tools. The sandy red pottery included cord-marked tripods and pot stands. The stamped pottery featured patterns such as grids, stripes, and thundercloud motifs, with vessel shapes commonly including concave-bottomed and round-bottomed types. Stone tools included grooved stepped adzes and half-moon-shaped knives, belonging to the Maqiao Culture; the lower layer contained clay gray pottery, black-glazed pottery, and sandy red pottery, with vessel forms mainly consisting of fish-fin leg tripods, ring-footed basins, and flared perforated beans. Stone tools included stepped stone adzes and willow-leaf-shaped arrowheads, belonging to the Liangzhu Culture. The Fenghuangdun site covers a total area of about 6,000 square meters. Partial excavations were conducted in 1984 and 1993. The cultural layer is about 1 meter thick, and stone tools such as knives and arrowheads were unearthed; pottery mainly consisted of clay gray pottery, clay black-glazed pottery, and sandy red pottery, with some decorated using incised, perforated, and appliqué techniques. Vessel types included tripods, beans, and pots. This belongs to the late Liangzhu Culture. The Ma'an Site reflects the cultural inheritance from the Liangzhu Culture to the Maqiao Culture.
