Shuang’ao Shishenggu Cliff Carvings

The Shishenggu Cliff Carvings at Shuang’ao are located at Gufo Rock in Shuang’ao Village, Yongchang, within the stone-built Shishenggu Temple, nestled against the mountain. In front stands the Five Emperors Hall (a late Qing dynasty structure), and to the west lies the Longtan Pool of Sha’ao.

The Shishenggu carvings feature serene expressions, simple yet classic designs, and refined carving techniques, showcasing a high level of artistic merit. They also reflect the devout and earnest aspirations of ancient people to free mothers from illness and extend their lives. In terms of style, they are rare examples of cliff carvings from the Song dynasty in southern Zhejiang.
