Tomb of Martyr Chen Shichun

The Tomb of Martyr Chen Shichun is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.

Chen Shichun (1903–1935) was from Wuyi Village, Jinxiang Town, Cangnan County. As a youth, he attended Jinxiang Primary School and Yishan Higher Primary School, and after graduation, he was admitted to Zhejiang Provincial No. 10 Middle School. When the May Fourth Movement broke out in 1919, he actively participated in the struggle of “fighting for national sovereignty externally and punishing traitors internally.” In 1922, he took the lead in founding a summer tutoring school, established the Jinxiang Sports Ground and the Xinxi Book and Newspaper Society. That same year, he graduated from Zhejiang Provincial No. 10 Middle School and was admitted to Shanghai University, founded by the Chinese Communist Party. Soon after, due to revolutionary work needs, he transferred to Nankai University in Tianjin for one year before ending his student life. In 1926, he joined the Chinese Communist Party in Luoyang, Henan. Thereafter, dispatched by the Party organization, he carried out underground revolutionary activities in Henan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and other provinces and cities. Because of his high sense of responsibility to the Party’s cause and his tireless dedication, he earned the praise of the organization and his comrades, and was appointed as a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the CCP. Throughout his life, he was imprisoned four times: the first three times in Hankou, Wuchang, and Shanghai, and each time he was released thanks to the strenuous efforts of the Party organization. The fourth time was on October 10, 1932, when he organized and led the masses in holding a large-scale demonstration on Shadu Road in Shanghai. He was unfortunately arrested, endured two years and four months of torment, and sacrificed on February 18, 1935, at Cell No. 555 of the Western Prison of the Shanghai Municipal Council’s International Settlement.

The Tomb of Martyr Chen Shichun is located at the southern foot of the mountain in Jinxiang Town, Cangnan County. It was built in May 1994 and covers an area of 290 square meters. At the front center of the tomb is a marble stele about 7 meters high, inscribed with the words “Eternal Glory to Martyr Chen Shichun.” On the back of the stele is a bust of Martyr Chen Shichun, flanked by an inscription of his biography and the four large characters “Immortal Heroes Through the Ages,” written by Lu Shengliang, former director of the Standing Committee of the Wenzhou Municipal People's Congress. The surrounding wall is built with colored marble, with bluestone railings, and the tomb is surrounded by lush pine and cypress trees. The entire structure is simple, elegant, solemn, and dignified.

Chen Shichun (1903–1935), a native of Jinxiang Town, studied at Wenzhou No. 10 Middle School in the 8th year of the Republic of China (1919), where he joined an anti-Japanese propaganda team. During the summer vacation of the 11th year, he ran a tutoring school, built the Jinxiang Sports Ground and the Xinxi Book and Newspaper Society, and organized a Lion Dance-themed lecture performance. After graduation, he attended Shanghai University and then Nankai University. In the 14th year, he moved to Henan, working in the military, banks, and schools, and joined the Chinese Communist Party in November.
