Nanping Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial

The Nanping Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial is a classic site for red tourism.

Nanping, now part of Xiaguan Town in Cangnan County, is located in the southeastern corner of Zhejiang Province. It is both a revolutionary base area and the hometown of Zhang Peinong, one of the organizers and leaders of the peasant armed struggle in southern Zhejiang. Throughout the long course of the New Democratic Revolution, Nanping contributed over 40 young men and women to the revolutionary cause on four separate occasions. Among them, 15 made the ultimate sacrifice, while dozens of local residents were arrested and imprisoned, enduring severe torture. A total of 121 civilian houses were burned down or destroyed, making a valuable contribution to national liberation.

The Nanping Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial is located at Nanping Kengziwei Gang in Xiaguan Town, Cangnan County. It was first built in the spring of 1987. On August 10, 2006, the century’s most powerful typhoon, Saomai, destroyed the exhibition hall, surrounding walls, and other facilities. Since March 2009, with the support of the Cangnan County Government, the Xiaguan Town Party Committee and government, as well as various sectors of society, the Nanping Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall was rebuilt. The new memorial was inaugurated with great ceremony in April 2010. Covering a land area of 399 square meters and a building area of 288.5 square meters, the main structures consist of a memorial monument, an exhibition hall, and a martyrs’ memorial wall. Upon entering the gate, there are two exhibition rooms on either side of the corridor, displaying historical materials about the revolutionary activities of the Nanping Party organization during various periods, photos of the martyrs, and inscriptions from veterans who participated in the revolutionary struggles in Nanping, as well as from city and county leaders. Among these are a photo of Zhang Peinong with fellow villagers at the Guangzhou Peasant Movement Institute in 1926, and the seal of the “Nanping Farmers’ Association of the Fourth District, Pingyang County” from 1927. Passing through the corridor, visitors will see a towering monument approximately 5 meters high and 1 meter wide. The front of the monument bears the inscription “Nanping Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Monument,” written by Long Yue, while the back, made of dark red marble, features an introduction to the Xiaguan Armed Uprising. On both sides of the monument are the martyrs’ memorial walls, where the life stories of 28 martyrs and veteran comrades—including Zhang Peinong—are engraved on smooth bluestone slabs.
