Cangnan Salt Farmers' Revolution Memorial Hall
The Cangnan Salt Farmers' Revolution Memorial Hall is a classic site for red tourism.
Haotou Village in Longgang Town, Cangnan County (formerly part of Baisha Township) was the birthplace of the salt farmers' movement in the 1920s. In June 1923, Wu Xinzhi, one of the early leaders of the peasant movement born in Haotou Village, led over 20 local salt farmers in an armed uprising. They attacked the Fangliang Salt Depot, which had a monopoly on salt sales and tax collection, killed the oppressive salt police, seized ammunition, and set the depot on fire, achieving the first victory of the salt farmers' uprising. In December 1926, Wu Xinzhi joined the Communist Party of China. The following January, he became the president of the Baisha Peasants' Association, continuing to lead and organize armed struggles among farmers and salt workers. During this period, he organized two "Kill the Police and Burn the Depots" uprisings on September 26, 1926, and February 18, 1927, respectively, burning down 18 salt depots from Xianggang to Piancao. These two uprisings shook the reactionary rule of the Kuomintang south of Aojiang. Later, Wu Xinzhi was arrested and martyred.
