Wencheng County Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery

The Wencheng County Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.

Wencheng is a land with a glorious revolutionary tradition and an important part of the southern Zhejiang revolutionary base area. During the Great Revolution, young people from Wencheng such as Zhao Gang, Zheng Jingheng, Zhou Ding, and Zheng Jiayi received Marxist-Leninist education in Beijing, Hangzhou, and other places, and successively joined the Communist Party of China. During the Agrarian Revolutionary War, Wencheng (then part of the western district of Rui’an County) was one of the peasant revolutionary zones in southern Zhejiang. During the War of Resistance Against Japan and the Liberation War, the people of Wencheng made significant contributions to the revolution under the leadership of the Party, and also paid a huge price. A total of 278 martyrs sacrificed their lives, some of whom even left no known names. They used their blood to lay the foundation of the republic.

The Wencheng County Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is located in Shanmen Village, Danxia Town, Wencheng County. In the spring of 1954, to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs, the Wencheng County People's Government built the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery on Guanshan Mountain in Shanmen Village, Danxia Town. It was expanded in 1985. The newly built martyrs' cemetery covers an area of 11,854.8 square meters, with a construction area of 1,165 square meters. It includes three front burial sections and one rear section, totaling 336 graves, where martyrs who sacrificed for the revolutionary cause since the Agrarian Revolutionary War rest. The newly built memorial monument is trilobate in shape and entirely constructed from rhyolite granite. Its scale and solemnity are more magnificent and awe-inspiring than the original. Every year on Tomb-Sweeping Day, county leaders, government officials, stationed troops, and school teachers and students organize visits to the martyrs' cemetery to pay tribute to the martyrs’ graves and present flower baskets and wreaths at the memorial monument, receiving education in patriotism and revolutionary tradition.

The Wencheng County Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a cultural relic protection unit of Wencheng County.
