Former Residence of Zhao Gang

The Former Residence of Zhao Gang is a cultural tourism attraction.

Zhao Gang (1887–1930), also known as Zhao Ting’ai and by the courtesy name Zhao Youren, was a native of Longchuan Village in Wencheng County. He attended local private schools and higher elementary schools, and after graduating from Zhejiang Railway School in 1915, he returned to his hometown to teach at Longchuan Higher Elementary School. In 1917, he found work at the Tianjin Railway Bureau through a friend’s introduction. In 1919, he was transferred to the Shanghai South Station on the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway, where he joined the Shanghai Railway Industrial Union and actively participated in the labor movement. After 1921, he was assigned to Hangzhou, successively working as a baggage weigher at stations such as Genshanmen on the Hangzhou Railway. In 1925, he joined the Communist Party of China, and shortly thereafter became the secretary of the General Branch of the CPC at Genshanmen Station. On March 22, 1927, the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway General Union was established within the Hangzhou railway system, and he was elected as an alternate executive committee member. In June, the Central Hangzhou District Committee was restructured into the CPC Hangxian (Prefecture) County Committee, with Zhao Gang serving as its secretary. After the leakage of the “Eastern Zhejiang Plan” in 1927, the Zhejiang Provincial Committee decided to establish the CPC Hangzhou Municipal Committee to strengthen leadership in Hangzhou’s work. Shen Zitian was appointed mayor of the municipal party committee, while Zhao Gang served as a member. Under difficult conditions, Zhao Gang made significant contributions to the party organizations of both Zhejiang Province and Hangzhou City.

On March 18, 1928, following instructions from the provincial committee, Zhao Gang returned to Longchuan under the pretext of visiting family. The next day, he gathered over 600 locals by beating the ancestral drum at the Zhao Clan Ancestral Hall. At the meeting, Zhao Gang passionately promoted revolutionary ideals, sending strong ripples through this remote mountain village and laying the seeds of revolution that would later lead local peasants to join the movement and enlist in the Red 13th Army.

In March 1929, Zhao Gang was arrested after his plan to incite a mutiny among soldiers of the 7th Squadron of the Hangzhou Patrol Battalion was leaked. In April of the same year, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison. While incarcerated, he actively tried to instigate a mutiny among the Nationalist Party’s security troops to stage a jailbreak, but the plot was uncovered. In the early hours of August 27 that same year, he was executed heroically.

The Former Residence of Zhao Gang is located in Longchuan Township, Wencheng County. It was sold by his family to another person in the 1990s.

Longchuan Township: Longchuan Township is an administrative township under the jurisdiction of Wencheng County, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is situated in the central part of Wencheng County, northwest of the county seat, bordered by Danan Town to the east, Jinlu Township to the south, Huangtan Town and Fu’ao Township to the west, and Bai Zhangting Town to the north.
