Former Residence of Liu Zhaoxiang

The former residence of Liu Zhaoxiang is a cultural tourism attraction.

Liu Zhaoxiang (1906.09–1998.08), courtesy name Youzhong, was a native of Xinzhai in Nantian, Wencheng County. In 1929, he graduated from the Department of Political Economy at Shanghai Public School University, then went to study at the Police Training Institute under Japan’s Ministry of Home Affairs (now the Police Academy), where he was among the first graduating class. He served successively as General Secretary of the Tokyo Direct Branch of the Kuomintang, Assistant Director of Party Affairs for the Tohoku Region of Japan (ten counties and cities), Party Committee Member of the Sendai Direct Branch and concurrently Chairman of the Business Federation. After the September 18th Incident in 1931, he led 180 overseas Chinese in Japan to join the Volunteer Army resisting Japan and served as a platoon leader. In 1932, he participated in the January 28th Battle of Shanghai, later becoming an inspector with the Nanjing Capital Police Bureau. Within a week, he apprehended the hiding Japanese Vice Consul Zang Ben, thwarting Japan’s plot to use his disappearance as a pretext for expanding aggression. He then served as a Junior Major Group Leader at the Nanjing Special Office of the Military Commission's Special Inspection Bureau, the Medium Major Director of the Changsha Office, a Medium Major Section Chief of the Special Inspection Bureau, the Senior Major Director of the Special Inspection Bureau in Shangyu, Zhejiang Province, a Senior Major Consultant at the Headquarters of the Third War Zone Command, the Senior Major Director of the Shanghai Special Office of the Aviation and Postal Inspection Bureau under the Military Commission, the Head of the Criminal Division at the Inspection General Bureau of the Ministry of Interior, the Director of the Personnel Office at the Jiangxi Provincial Police and Security Bureau, concurrently serving as the Senior Major Head of the Personnel Division of the Jiangxi Provincial Garrison Command, an Inspector and concurrent Head of the Personnel Office at the Ministry of Interior Police General Bureau, a Senior Appointed Inspector, a Senior Appointed Specialist Committee Member of the - Data Group concurrently serving as the Head of the Second Division, a Training Committee Member of the Cadre Training Class, and a Professor at the Political Warfare School.

Starting in 1951, he served as a Design Committee Member of Taiwan’s “- Bureau”, the Senior Major Director and Head of the Special Inspection Bureau of the Taiwan Provincial Security Command. In 1959, he became the Major General Director of the Special Inspection Bureau under the Taiwan Garrison Command. In 1978, he was appointed as a member of the “Executive Yuan National Defense Veterans Counseling Committee”, Chairman of Xinhu Natural Gas Co., Ltd., among other positions. Beginning October 1977, he was appointed as an Honorary Councilor and Consultative Advisor of the Taipei Qingtian Fellow Townsmen Association.

Mr. Liu Zhaoxiang loved his country and hometown, and in his later years, he was especially concerned about national unification and public welfare in his birthplace. Though living frugally and adhering to a modest life, he generously contributed funds. In 1990, during a visit back to his hometown, he donated 110,000 yuan to renovate the Liu Ji Temple, Boywen Library, Canzheng Ancestral Hall, Zhongjie Ancestral Hall, and the Memorial Pavilion for the Hometown of Wencheng Gong. In April 1998, he returned home to pay respects at ancestral graves, assisted in road repairs and tree planting for greening. He fell ill due to overexertion, and passed away on August 22 at his residence in Xiyang Villa, Nantian, at the age of 93.

The former residence of Liu Zhaoxiang is located in Xinzhai Village, Jiudu, Nantian Town, just 50 meters from the famous Liu Ji Temple. The building covers an area of 630 square meters, consisting of a two-story wooden structure surrounded by a wall over two meters high. In the main hall hangs a photo and introduction of Mr. Liu Zhaoxiang, along with furnishings such as a table, bed, and stools. In front of the residence is a pond, with various trees planted around, creating a pleasant scenery.

General Overview

Jiudu Village in Nantian Town is the hometown of Liu Bowen, an eminent statesman of the Ming Dynasty. Located on a high mountain plateau, it was formed through the merger of the former Nansan and Nansi villages. The village has 14 villager groups, 1,328 households, and a total population of 2,861, including 2,680 agricultural residents. The village’s agricultural land area spans 5,487 mu, including 1,245 mu of arable land, 482 mu of orchards, and 3,760 mu of forested mountains. In 2011, the total annual income of the village was 17.08 million yuan, with a per capita income of 7,625 yuan.
