Liu Lian Ancestral Hall

Liu Lian Ancestral Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of Wencheng County.

Liu Lian Ancestral Hall is located in Xinzhai Village, Nantian Town, Wencheng County. Originally named “Ancestral Hall of the Ministerial Official,” it was built in the fourth year of the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty (1525). The original site was in Santan, but it fell into disrepair in the early years of the Republic of China, leaving only a plaque inscribed with “Yishi Zanying” (Generations of Noble Officials), which was written and hung by Xu Shaowei in the first year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1821). In 1946, clan members funded its reconstruction at a new location on the former foundation of the Liu residence in Nantian. It is a single-eave wooden structure with a five-bay width. The central bay features a raised-beam frame, while the side bays use a through-tenon frame. A seated statue of Liu Lian is enshrined in the center of the main bay. The beams and pillars are sturdy, and the structure is tightly built. Liu Lian (1348–1379), styled Mengzao, was the eldest son of Liu Ji. He was known for his loyalty, integrity, and resoluteness, and earned great appreciation from the Ming Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. In the tenth year of the Hongwu era (1377), he was appointed as an Examination Supervisor and then as a Probationary Censor. The following year, he was sent to serve as the Right Provincial Administrator of Jiangxi. In the twelfth year (1379), he was coerced by the party of Hu Weiyong and died by falling into a well. Liu Lian showed literary talent and moral character at a young age and excelled especially in poetry.
