Longjiang Nunnery

Longjiang Nunnery is a cultural relic protection unit of Wencheng County.

Longjiang Nunnery is located in Shuicun Village, Nantian Town, Wencheng County, also known as Xialong Nunnery. It faces east-southeast and its original construction date is unknown. It was rebuilt during the Wanli era (1573–1619) of the Ming Dynasty. The main hall, the Mahavira Hall, was reconstructed during the Qianlong reign (1736–1795) of the Qing Dynasty, measuring five bays in width and six bays in depth. The caisson ceiling and roof panels in the central bay are painted with colored landscapes and figurative stories, and the hall has a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. On either side of the front of the hall are attached wing rooms, each three bays wide, with the total area covering approximately 500 square meters. Inside the nunnery are preserved two horizontal plaques from the 25th year of Qianlong (1760): “Canlong Ancient Temple” and “Merciful Clouds and Buddhist Rain,” as well as stone bases from the Ming Dynasty. In the left secondary bay, there is a large stone-carved water trough inscribed with the characters “Longjiang Nunnery, Qianlong Jiyou Year of the Qing Dynasty (1789).” The site is surrounded by stone walls, and a stele inscribed with “Record of the Renovation Year, Month, and Land of Longjiang Nunnery” from the 46th year of Qianlong (1781), March, is embedded in the middle of the eastern wall.
