Ciling Pavilion

Ciling Pavilion is a cultural relic protection unit of Wencheng County.

Ciling Pavilion is located in Nantian Village, Nantian Town, Wencheng County. It was first built in the first year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1628) and was renovated with funds raised by clan members in the eleventh year of the Republic of China (1922). The pavilion has three bays, is constructed of wood, and features a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof. Facing south, it is backed by mountains to the north. The eastern and western sides feature stone walls built outside the eaves columns, while the main northern wall has an arched doorway in the central bay. The Ti’er Mountain hiking trail passes through the pavilion. In the fourth year of the Jianwen era of the Ming Dynasty (1402), Prince Yan Zhu Di ascended to the throne under the pretext of "cleansing the court," but Liu Bowen’s second son, Liu Ji (note: character missing), refused to accept the new rule. He resigned from his official post, retired to Huayang, and resisted repeated imperial summons to serve. He was eventually captured and brought to the capital, where he bid farewell to his fellow villagers here before being executed upon arrival. To commemorate Liu Ji’s noble character, the villagers built a pavilion at the site of their farewell, naming it “Ciling Pavilion” (Farewell Pavilion on the Ridge).
