Sacred Spring Cave

Sacred Spring Cave is a cultural relic protection unit of Wencheng County.

Sacred Spring Cave is located in Guoshan Village, Longchuan Township, Wencheng County. Originally a natural wonder cave, it is 3 meters high, with a flat ceiling, about 10 meters wide, and 6.8 meters deep. Legend has it that in the first year of the Chongning era during the Northern Song Dynasty (1102), Lady Tang gave birth to a daughter named Li, styled Miaoxuan, and mother and daughter built a thatched hut here. In the second year of the Zhi Zheng era of the Yuan Dynasty (1342), Monk Tianran pioneered the site and raised funds to build a main gate, partition walls, and upturned eaves in front of the cave. Because two corners inside the cave have clear springs flowing year-round, a plaque inscribed with “Sacred Spring Cave” was hung above the gate. About 260 meters above and to the right of the cave is another cave, approximately 5 meters high, 3.5 meters deep, and 3.3 meters wide, known as “Guanyin Cave.” It houses a stone-carved shrine enshrining a statue of Guanyin.
