Shanmen Baiyun An

Shanmen Baiyun An is a cultural relic protection unit of Wencheng County.

Baiyun An is situated on Yunfeng Mountain in Shanmen Village, Danan Town, Wencheng County, also called Yan An. It was first built in the Tang Dynasty, rebuilt in the 15th year of the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty (1417), and the current main structure dates to the Qing Dynasty. The Mahavira Hall faces south and is constructed against a cliff cave wall, with part of the roof ridge visible and a suspended gable roof. The hall is five bays wide and three bays deep, with the central bay featuring statues of the Three Jewels Buddha, and the sides serving as monks’ quarters, while the walls are adorned with murals. In front of the main hall is the Skanda Hall, which is 4.5 meters wide and deep, featuring a hip-and-gable roof; to the west is a simply constructed mountain gate; to the east, stone steps lead to the Kṣitigarbha Hall and Guanyin Pavilion; about 20 meters away lies the Xuzhenjun Temple, which is also three bays in both width and depth. Inside and outside the main hall, there are 10 stone inscriptions dating from the Ming Dynasty to the Republican era. The surrounding area features scenic spots such as Qingyun Stairs, Twin Stone Candles, Sunny-Rain Waterfall, Dripping Rock, Immortal Bridge, Dragon Mouth Rock, Heaven-Piercing Cave, and Greeting Monk, making it a famous tourist destination. An old folk rhyme says: “A Buddhist pavilion in a high cliff cave, half rainy and half sunny. Search all five counties of Wenzhou, only Yan An stands out as a scenic wonder.”
