Wencheng Carp Mountain Ruins

The Wencheng Carp Mountain Ruins are a cultural heritage site protected by Wencheng County.

The Carp Mountain Ruins are located on the hill behind the bus station in Shaxi Town, Wencheng County. Carp Mountain is surrounded by water on three sides, lying alone by the Feiyun River, resembling a carp resting on a riverbank, with only its southern side forming a low, flat area with Luoshan Mountain. The mountain top is flat with gentle slopes, and the ruins are distributed across the summit at an altitude of about 30 meters, covering an area of 6,000 square meters. During a cultural relics survey, a number of stone artifacts including stone axes, adzes, arrowheads, knives, and chisels were gradually discovered. Though they show signs of polishing, the tools are rough in finish and are all dark bluish-black in color. These findings indicate that the site dates back to the late Neolithic Age.

Shaxi Town: Located in the southwestern part of Wencheng County, Shaxi Town is the site of the Shanxi Water Control Hub Project, a national key infrastructure initiative. In 1998, it was listed as one of Zhejiang Province’s pilot towns for comprehensive small-town reforms and ranks among the province’s 136 key towns. After the completion of the Shanxi Water Control Hub, China’s second-highest dam and the largest artificial lake in southern Zhejiang were formed, making Shaxi a central tourism hub in southern Wenzhou. The town has a population of 41,000 and covers an area of 102.5 square kilometers. It boasts a rich revolutionary history, as well as abundant resources in hydropower, tourism, and minerals, making it a typical resource-strong and revolutionary heritage town in Wencheng County.
