Wenzhou Museum

Wenzhou Museum is a comprehensive local museum established in 1958, originally located on Jiangxin Island. In 2003, the new building on the west side of Century Square was completed and officially opened to the public.

The architectural design of Wenzhou Museum is inspired by the majestic peaks and lush mountains of Yandang Mountain, seeking a bold and rustic artistic essence. The screen wall at the main entrance is decorated with a stone carving of a banyan tree, symbolizing the industrious, pragmatic, and indomitable pioneering and innovative spirit of the people of Wenzhou. The central hall features a granite wall adorned with nine bronze relief murals depicting traditional Chinese mythological themes—Pangu Creating Heaven and Earth, Nüwa Mending the Sky, Kuafu Chasing the Sun, Jingwei Filling the Sea, Houyi Shooting the Suns, Chang’e Flying to the Moon, Shennong and Fuxi, Suiren Discovering Fire, and Yu the Great Taming the Floods—striving to showcase the profound richness of Chinese civilization.

The museum houses over 20,000 cultural relics across 20 categories, including ceramics, bronzes, polychrome sculptures, brick carvings, lacquerware, calligraphy, and paintings. It is particularly noted for its ceramics, polychrome sculptures, and paintings. Highlights include the Eastern Jin Dynasty land deed of Zhu Man’s wife, Lady Xue, unearthed in Yishan; Tang Dynasty Buddhist scriptures unearthed from the Jinsha Pagoda; Northern Song Dynasty polychrome sculptures from the Baixiang Pagoda; and Northern Song Dynasty celadon ware unearthed in Xishan—treasures prized both in China and abroad.

The museum covers a construction area of approximately 26,000 square meters, with a total exhibition space of 8,000 square meters. The 2,100-square-meter History Hall displays the 5,000-year historical footprint of the “People of Wenzhou,” and there are also six thematic exhibition halls, including those for Calligraphy and Painting, Ceramics, Nature, and Crafts. The exhibitions make full use of spatial composition, striving for breakthroughs and innovations in content design and artistic form, so that a large number of cultural treasures can be fully displayed, the connotations of relics more deeply explored, and thereby more visitors can develop an appreciation for traditional culture and familiarity with the history of Wenzhou.

Moving forward, Wenzhou Museum takes the implementation of premium exhibitions as an entry point, actively engaging in functions such as cultural relic collection and preservation, academic research, and social education. It aims to align with advanced museums worldwide through modernized, scientific, and professional management, to create a bright future together.
