Wenzhou Cuiwei Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery

Wenzhou Cuiwei Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism destination.

To commemorate revolutionary martyrs, carry forward their legacy, and better promote patriotic and revolutionary tradition education, the municipal government decided to build a martyrs' cemetery atop Cuiwei Mountain in the western part of Lucheng. In 1952, a complex comprising tombs, monuments, and pavilions covering an area of 950 square meters with a built-up area of 551 square meters was completed. It has since undergone multiple renovations, including the demolition of the two-story tombs around the memorial monument in 1962 and their replacement with bluestone railings. In 1974 and 1990, further renovations and expansions were carried out, adding 128 two-tier trapezoidal tombs; bringing the total number of tomb niches to 302, along with a new southern approach and management facilities, covering an area of 1,192 square meters with a built-up area of 593 square meters. The tombstone is 10 meters high, faced with granite, and inscribed with Mao Zedong’s calligraphy: “Eternal Glory to Those Who Died for the Nation.”

The Cuiwei Mountain Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is built facing south along the hillside and houses the remains or ashes of 172 revolutionary martyrs. Notable martyrs include: Chen Wenjie, who served as the Political Director of the 13th Red Army in May 1930; Wang Pingzhou, who was the Secretary of the Yongjia County Committee of the CPC in 1928; and Lei Gaosheng (original name Shi Dezhang), who was the Commander of the 1st Regiment (Division) of the 13th Red Army in May 1930. In 2005, the municipal Party committee and government decided to rebuild the Cuiwei Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery. Construction commenced on April 5, 2007.

The new Wenzhou Cuiwei Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery is being constructed in three phases, with a budget of 160 million yuan. It covers an area of 40,357 square meters, including a memorial plaza of 2,000 square meters, a martyrs’ tomb area of 2,072 square meters, and natural ecological forest land of 22,230 square meters. Facilities also include an entrance plaza and a martyrs' memorial hall. In 2009, the first phase of the expansion project, with an investment of 20.88 million yuan, was completed. This phase included the main structures: the monument, tomb area, rest pavilions and corridors, and activity plaza. In 2010, additional supporting facilities such as the entrance plaza at the southern foot of Cuiwei Mountain and the stone stairway leading up the mountain were completed, presenting a brand-new look to welcome citizens paying tribute to the revolutionary martyrs.
