Former Site of Chengsentai Postal Agency

The Former Site of Chengsentai Postal Agency is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Chengsentai Postal Agency was established by the progressive figure Cheng Zengxing and served as a secret liaison point between the Yongjia County Committee and the Southern Zhejiang Regional Committee of the Communist Party during the Liberation War.

Cheng Zengxing (1901–1970), a native of Shuangxi Village, Shuangchao Township, Lucheng District, was an honest and unassuming man who ran a business by the Shuangxi wharf. He operated the Chengsentai Store, dealing in sundries, aquatic products, and daily goods, and also set up a postal agency. In early 1946, after receiving education and guidance from Feng Zengrong, a member of the Yongjia County Committee and head of the Zelin District Committee, Cheng became more politically aware and began undertaking tasks assigned by the Party. These included setting up a “dedicated mailbox” for the Yongjia County Committee at the Chengsentai Postal Agency. This mailbox made full use of the legitimate channel provided by the postal agency to receive and forward important documents, letters, publications, and printed materials for the County Committee, ensuring communication between the County Committee and revolutionary organizations and individuals across the province and beyond. At the same time, Cheng Zengxing was also responsible for transporting revolutionary comrades traveling to and fro. The Cheng residence became a secret base for revolutionary figures such as Feng Zengrong, head of the Zelin and ZeXi District Committees, while working along the river, and also functioned as the County Committee’s “Shuangxi Transport Station” in the Zelin District. Additionally, Cheng arranged ferry boats for revolutionary comrades traveling across the Ou River and used his store to procure daily supplies for the revolutionary base areas.

Until the liberation of Wenzhou in May 1949, the Chengsentai Postal Agency skillfully evaded enemy surveillance and played a unique role during the war years. On September 3, 1986, in a letter to Cheng Zengxing’s son, Cheng Yueqing, Comrade Feng Zengrong highly praised the family’s work, stating that “there was not a single error or mishap in the mail transfer operations.”

The Former Site of Chengsentai Postal Agency is located in Shuangxi Village, Shuangchao Township, Lucheng District, and is currently the residence of descendants of Cheng Zengxing and other villagers, covering an area of 350 square meters.
