Site of the Baili Fang Courier Station

The Site of the Baili Fang Courier Station is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.

In February 1942, Liu Ying, Secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the CPC, was arrested in Wenzhou, and most of the courier stations in Wenzhou were destroyed. The Party organization designated the home of Jiang Zhao (also known as Jiang Guangzhao or Jiang Yunhua), a CPC member, at No. 64 Baili Fang (now No. 134 Baili East Road) as an underground courier station, with Jiang Zhao as the person in charge. In October 1943, after Fan Yichen, the former Secretary of the Yongjia County Committee of the CPC, betrayed the cause, seven underground Party members including Chen Nengxiao were tragically killed. From then on, No. 64 Baili Fang became the only surviving underground courier station connecting the Party organization in the Wenzhou area with the Yongjia County Committee and the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee. Jiang Zhao became the only underground Party member who remained in the urban area for a long time. In June 1944, after Long Yue, Secretary of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee, sent Wu Rongying, a former political courier of the Provincial Committee, to infiltrate the urban area and reconnect with Jiang Zhao, No. 64 Baili Fang became the safest courier station for receiving “guests.” Zeng Shaowen, Secretary of the Yongjia County Committee, stayed at Jiang Zhao’s home multiple times when he came to the city, and through Jiang Zhao’s connections, he directly engaged with student leaders and progressive youths, rebuilt the Party’s secret organizations, and led the underground resistance in the urban area of Wenzhou. Feng Zengrong, Secretary of the Urban District Committee, also frequently held meetings at Jiang Zhao’s home to assign tasks for the underground Party work in the urban area. In September 1946, Zheng Danfu, Standing Committee Member and Head of the Organization Department of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee, came to Wenzhou for medical treatment due to illness and stayed at Jiang Zhao’s home for five days before safely returning to the Special Committee headquarters. Long Yue, Secretary of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee, who frequently had to relocate the committee headquarters and found it difficult to take his daughter Long Jiangrong along, once entrusted her to be cared for at Jiang Zhao’s home. Whenever “guests” came to Jiang Zhao’s home, everyone in the family—from his grandmother, mother, and mute uncle, to his siblings—participated in sentry duty, hosting, message delivery, and running errands such as purchasing supplies.

The Site of the Baili Fang Courier Station is located at No. 134 Baili East Road, Lucheng District, Wenzhou. This courier station was originally Jiang Zhao’s home, which has since been demolished. Under the harsh circumstances where the underground Party in the urban area of Wenzhou suffered severe destruction, this station played a special role in the liberation of the Southern Zhejiang region.
