Wenzhou Zhongshan Memorial Hall

Wenzhou Zhongshan Memorial Hall is a Wenzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a patriotic education base.

In February 1927, after the Northern Expeditionary Army entered Zhejiang, people from all walks of life in Wenzhou initiated the construction of Zhongshan Park between Huagai Mountain and Jigu Mountain to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great democratic revolutionary and founding father of the Republic of China. The park was completed in October 1930, covering an area of 54,600 square meters. In November 1932, the Zhongshan Memorial Hall was completed.

Since its completion, the Zhongshan Memorial Hall has hosted numerous exhibitions. In 1952, it was converted into the Sino-Soviet Friendship Hall, and during the Cultural Revolution, it became the Wenzhou Children’s Activity Room. Due to years of neglect and severe damage, it was rebuilt in June 1987 on the original foundation, replicating the original style with traditional simplified tiles, double eaves, surrounding corridors, and an elegant, majestic structure. To enrich the exhibition content, staff were dispatched to collect photos, drawings, and other materials about Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s life from his memorial halls, halls, and former residences in Guangdong, Zhongshan, Guangzhou, and Nanjing. These were displayed in the memorial hall’s exhibition rooms. On the first floor, the central hall features a half-length white marble statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, while the surrounding walls display a series of precious photographs chronicling his revolutionary life, divided into four phases: Youth and Education, Aspiring to Save the Nation (1866–1894); Devoted to Revolution, Overthrowing the Monarchy (1894–1911); Founding the Republic, Defending Democracy (1911–1922); and Vowing for the Northern Expedition, Dedicating Himself Entirely (1922–1925). The upper floor houses a video room and conference hall. It officially opened to the public in 1999 for visitors to pay their respects. Compatriots from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as international friends, have visited and paid homage on multiple occasions.

The Zhongshan Memorial Hall is located at the northern end of Zhongshan Park in Lucheng, with a construction area of 488 square meters. It features a brick-and-wood structure that blends Chinese and Western styles. The plan is convex-shaped, with the foundation built from neat white blocks. The front hall resembles a pavilion, spanning three bays with two and a half floors, featuring flying eaves, small corner brackets, a hip-and-gable roof, beams, hanging columns, and a surrounding terrace with railings. The central horizontal plaque bears the five large characters “Zhongshan Memorial Hall.”
