Xialongshan Site

The Xialongshan Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Wenzhou.

The Xialongshan Site is located at the summit of Xialongshan Mountain in Xiawan Village, Linjiang Town, Lucheng District, Wenzhou City, with an elevation of about 44 meters and a distribution area of approximately 3,000 square meters. Xialongshan Mountain borders Hengshan Village to the east, connects to National Highway 330 to the south, faces Xiawan Village to the west, and overlooks the Ou River to the north. The mountaintop is relatively flat and currently used as farmland by local villagers, scattered with numerous stone tools and pottery shards. The stone tools mainly include adzes, arrowheads, knives, and similar items. The pottery shards consist primarily of gray clay pottery, hard pottery, and stamped hard pottery; decorative patterns are mainly cord marks and striations; the stamped hard pottery is mostly blackened pottery with stamped striations. Identifiable vessel shapes include jars, among others. On the terrace edge of a field on the southern side of the site, a layer of fired earth was found approximately 0.7 meters below the surface, about 2.6 meters long, and varying in thickness from 1 to 8 centimeters. Based on the analysis of collected artifacts, many similarities were found with the Shuoshan Site, a provincial-level cultural heritage site in Wenzhou, with the two sites being about 8 kilometers apart in a straight line. It can thus be inferred that this site is also a late Neolithic to Shang-Zhou period, settlement-type “Haokan Culture” site located along the Ou River basin.
