The Twenty-Eight Constellations Wells – Hengjing Well

The Twenty-Eight Constellations Wells – Hengjing Well is a Wenzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Hengjing Well is located in front of the residence at No. 52 Hengjing Lane, Lucheng District. The well was first dug during the Taining era of the Jin Dynasty (323–326) and is one of the Twenty-Eight Constellations Wells of the old city of Wenzhou. The current well was rebuilt in the 30th year of the Zhiyuan reign during the Yuan Dynasty (1350). The well curb is hexagonal, formed by six bluestone slabs joined together, with geometric patterns and floral designs carved on the outer side, while the inner three bluestone slabs are inscribed with dated inscriptions. The well wall is built with bluestones laid in staggered courses to form a cylindrical shape, with an inner diameter of about 1.45 meters. The water in Hengjing Well is supplied by the groundwater from Huagai Mountain, naturally flowing up through cracks in the well’s bedrock. The water is clear, cool, and sweet in taste, and is still used by nearby residents for cleaning purposes.

In 1992, Hengjing Well was listed as part of the third batch of Wenzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Units.
