Hugai Mountain City Wall

The Hugai Mountain City Wall is a cultural relic protection unit of Wenzhou City.

There are two remaining sections of the Hugai Mountain City Wall in downtown Wenzhou. The northern section runs from northwest to southeast, with a remaining length of 67 meters, a height of 4.3 meters, and a width of 7 meters. The southern section runs from north to south, with a remaining length of 30 meters, a height of 2.5 meters, and a width of 9 meters. The western side of the southern section is backed by a mountain, and the protected area extends 5 meters outward from the wall. Both sides of the wall are built with block stones, while the northern part is constructed with rammed earth. According to the Yongjia County Annals from the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, “In the 15th year of the Shunzhi era of this dynasty, the wall was repaired and the moat dredged... divine and powerful firearms were installed on various mountains.” During the Yongzheng, Qianlong, Daoguang, and Tongzhi eras, five major wall repairs and moat dredging projects were carried out to strengthen the city’s defenses. The Hugai Mountain City Wall is a historical testament to Wenzhou’s old city and holds significant value and importance in the city’s development history. In April 2000, the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government announced the Hugai Mountain City Wall and others as part of the fourth batch of cultural relic protection units in Wenzhou.

Protected Area: Extends 5 meters outward from the base of the wall.

Building Control Zone: Extends from both sides of the wall down to the eastern and western foothills of Hugai Mountain. Within this zone, building heights must not exceed the Yellow Sea elevation level of the wall.
