Taimu Covered Bridges

The Taimu Covered Bridges are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Taimu Covered Bridges are located in Taishun County, Wenzhou City. Taishun is a mountainous county in southern Zhejiang Province, bordered by Wencheng to the northeast, Jingning to the northwest, and Fujian Province to the south. It covers a total area of 1,700 square kilometers and is known as a place of "nine parts mountains, half part water, and half part farmland." The region features high mountains and remote roads, with overlapping peaks and 179 mountains over 1,000 meters in elevation, and an average altitude of over 490 meters. Historically, many notable figures sought refuge here to escape turmoil, gradually settling in this secluded, mountainous "paradise" with few inhabitants. They developed a distinctive rural mountain culture and left behind invaluable historical and cultural heritage. The Taimu Covered Bridges are among the most outstanding representatives of this heritage.

As the name suggests, a "covered bridge" is a bridge with a roof. In historical Taishun, villages were scattered and transportation was limited. People could walk for miles without encountering any signs of human habitation. According to the ancestors' "transportation planning," a sheltered pavilion for resting would be built at regular intervals along the main stone-paved roads. Building a roof over the bridge not only protected the wooden structure from sun and rain but also served the function of a weather shelter. Some covered bridges even had rooms for temporary lodging.
