Baihe Gorge Scenic Area
Baihe Pine (Rock): Located at the mouth of Baihe Gorge. The rock is hammer-shaped, about 20 meters tall, standing by the water like an old man in a straw raincoat and hat [fishing alone on a cold river in snow], while atop the rock grows an ageless pine tree, corresponding to another similarly aged pine nearby. Legend has it that the pine on the rock is a bachelor, and the one on the shore is a widow. Every night under the moonlight, the two pines slowly lean toward each other, like lovers meeting.
Baihe Ferry: Located at the mouth of Baihe Gorge, the western terminal of Feiyun Lake where the Sanchapuxi and Siqianxi rivers converge.
Legend has it that in ancient times, when floods ravaged the land, turbid waves filled the sky, and all living things suffered. At that time, the Jade Emperor’s celestial official, Tai Bai Jin Xing, rode a white crane traveling the world. One day, he arrived at the source of Feiyun River and saw only a vast expanse of white, with hardly any place for birds or beasts to stand. They all gathered around the immortal’s white crane, hoping to survive. Moved by their plight, the immortal pleaded with the Jade Emperor, who then ordered the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas to lower the waters by ninety-nine zhang and nine chi, restoring mountains, rivers, fields, and allowing all life to revive. Because the source of the Feiyun River was rich in water, the confluence of the two streams where the white crane immortal had passed remained very wide. For the convenience of transportation, people established a ferry here, calling it Baihe Immortal Ferry, later shortened to Baihe Ferry. Another legend says the ferryboat was formed from a silver bean pod that the white crane immortal plucked from a silver bean tree and tossed into the river.
