Fengwen Battle Monument

The Fengwen Battle Monument is a classic site on China’s red tourism routes.

The Fengwen Battle in Taishun from February 5 to 7, 1937, was the largest engagement between the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army Advance Detachment and enemy forces in southern Zhejiang. On February 5, a regiment of the Nationalist 80th Division along with the 3rd and 4th Zhejiang Security Regiments, totaling about 3,000 troops, attacked Taishun Fengwen. Liu Ying and Su Yu led the main force of the Advance Detachment in an ambush at the Grand Canyon of Jian? Mountain, killing hundreds of enemy soldiers. When the Nationalist troops discovered the main force of the Advance Detachment, they swarmed in and pressed forward relentlessly. By the third day of fighting, the Nationalists had surrounded the main force of the Advance Detachment on both flanks. In this critical moment, a thick fog suddenly rose in the mountains. Liu Ying and Su Yu immediately decided to leave a small unit behind to provide cover while the main force quickly retreated. The covering unit lured the enemies from the east and south up the mountain, then quietly withdrew from their position. Both enemy groups mistakenly thought the other was the Red Army and engaged in fierce crossfire, suffering heavy casualties.

The Fengwen Battle Monument is located in Niutangwan Village, Fengwen Township, Taishun County. On July 1, 2001, the Fengwen Township government established the monument at the site of the battle to support the development of the “Red Army Route” as part of Taishun County’s red tourism initiatives, providing visitors with a place for commemoration and education.
