Hupaling Battle Memorial Monument

The Hupaling Battle Memorial Monument is a classic site on China’s red tourism routes.

On May 22, 1935, a squadron of the Kuomintang Zhejiang Security Regiment set out from Wulipai and invaded Fengwen Township. Liu Ying, Secretary of the Provisional Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party for Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region, led the Provincial Special Task Force to ambush the enemy at Hupaling. Holding the high ground, they annihilated an enemy advance unit, while the rest fled in disarray. The Hupaling Battle was an ambush personally directed by Liu Ying, taking advantage of the favorable terrain to achieve victory against a larger force, during a time when the main forces of the Red Army Advance Division were not in Taishun. This battle shocked the Kuomintang authorities in Taishun County, safeguarded the Taiping Revolutionary Base Area, and promoted the implementation of party construction and land reform within the base area.

The Hupaling Battle Memorial Monument is located in Hupaling Village, Fengwen Township, Taishun County. In July 2001, the Fengwen Township government built the 50-square-meter monument to support the development of the “Red Army Road” and promote red tourism.
