Wubu Ancient Village

Wubu Village, located 16.9 kilometers northeast of Jingning County, derives its name from the first characters of the nearby villages Wucun (吴村) and Budaohou (布袋后). According to elders in Wucun, over 400 years ago there were only three households here—one had migrated from the nearby Zhengshantou Village, while the other two were brothers who traveled along a route from Guangdong to Fujian to Baofeng before finally settling in Wucun. Originally a village inhabited by people with the surname Wu, residents gradually moved away over time for various reasons, yet the village name remained unchanged. Today, all villagers in Wucun bear the surname Lei and it is a purely She ethnic minority village.

Wubu Village has largely preserved the original way of life of the She people, maintaining traditional practices such as fire dancing, brocade weaving, mountain song singing, and wearing traditional costumes. It is vividly referred to as a “living museum of the She ethnic group.”

Standing on the mountainside and looking out, the fields, village houses, curling smoke, and hardworking people create a scene reminiscent of a richly colored landscape painting. The continuous mountain ranges, terraced fields nestled among them, and the presence of people all contribute to a refreshing, idyllic feeling—as if entering a paradise untouched by the outside world.
