Guide: A national scenic area located 23 kilometers from downtown Yongkang. The Fangyan Scenic Area boasts beautiful scenery and is known as a “heaven on earth.” It features peaks, caves, valleys, waterfalls, streams, lakes, as well as rich historical and revolutionary heritage. The area comprises eight major scenic zones with over two hundred scenic spots of varying sizes. Highlights: Temple Fairs – From the first day of the eighth lunar month to around the Double Ninth Festival in September every year, temple parade teams from Yongkang urban and rural areas, as well as from Xinchang, Shengzhou, Shaoxing, Zhuji, Wenzhou, Lishui, and surrounding counties and cities, march with flags, showcasing martial arts skills such as swordplay, spearplay, boxing, and other eighteen types of weaponry. The Fangyan Scenic Area features breathtaking steep cliffs, naturally sculpted rock formations, a scattering of cave chambers, and a variety of cascading waterfalls and serene lakes. Among the cultural attractions are the ancient stone cave temples, the largest local deity temple in the Jiangnan region – the Temple of Hu Gong the Great Emperor, and the unique Wufeng Academy, the birthplace of the Yongkang School of the Southern Song Dynasty. Hu Gong, whose given name was Ze, was a native of Yongkang, Wuzhou (now part of Zhejiang) during the Northern Song Dynasty. In the first year of the Mingdao era, Hu Ze, then serving as Vice Minister of Works, petitioned to exempt the poll tax in Quzhou and Wuzhou, which earned him great popularity. The local people regarded Hu Gong as their guardian and god of happiness. Next to the Hu Gong Ancestral Hall stands a quotation wall inscribed with Chairman Mao’s words “To govern is to bring prosperity to the land,” while at the entrance of Fangyan, there is an imperial plaque inscribed with Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty’s calligraphy “He Ling,” creating a striking visual dialogue. The Fangyan Cultural Temple Fair, which originated from the worship of Hu Gong and has a history of nearly a thousand years, is colorful and spectacular. Transportation: All trains on the Jinhua–Wenzhou Railway stop at Yongkang Station. From downtown Yongkang, take bus No. 2 to the New Bus Terminal and transfer to the dedicated Fangyan shuttle bus, which runs every four minutes.
