Taipei’s Yongkang Street area has long been a foodie hotspot and a must-visit destination for international tourists. On Yongkang Street near Jinhua Street sits a 20-year-old Hong Kong-style char siu shop called “Tai Hing Char Siu.” Recently, the shop posted a notice stating that it will only operate until December 30 of this year. The main reasons are the owner’s advanced age and the inability to find a successor, leading owner Chen Jiancheng to decide to close up shop.

The owner of Tai Hing Char Siu prepares ingredients daily—roasting the char siu duck in the morning for lunch service and again in the afternoon for dinner. The char siu is flavorful and juicy. However, the owner admitted that running a char siu shop means working up to 15 hours a day. Now that he’s older and his stamina is declining, he finds it hard to keep up with the workload. Coupled with the fact that his apprentice has other plans and can’t take over, he decided to close the shop he’s run for over 20 years.

Tai Hing Char Siu may have an ordinary storefront, but thanks to its reputation, it attracts not only dedicated visitors but also many local regulars. Some netizens say it’s the best char siu shop they’ve ever eaten at—and they’ll miss it. A Yongkang Street resident lamented the closure, saying Tai Hing’s char siu rice is the best food on the street. Others, upon hearing there’s less than a month left, are planning to visit. Some even went last night, only to find a long queue when they arrived at 6 PM, with waits of over an hour to get a meal.
