Baiyun Scenic Area

Baiyun is located in the suburbs of Yongkang City, 3 kilometers from Guli Town, covering a total area of 15.3 square kilometers. It belongs to the low mountain and hilly area in the western part of the Yongkang Basin.

The natural landscape of Baiyun Scenic Area is characterized by majestic and elegant peaks, rugged and precipitous cliffs, secluded valleys, mysterious caves, cascading waterfalls, and clear springs. The entire scenic area features undulating mountain ridges, steep cliffs, and a ring of peaks, with thousands of peaks standing like a screen. Baiyun Mountain, the highest peak in the scenic area, rises 633.2 meters above sea level, towering above the surrounding peaks and overlooking the mountains. On rainy days, clouds and mist shroud the area; on sunny days, white clouds drift around. From the summit, one can seem to pluck stars and the moon, while looking down reveals a sea of peaks encircling the base — truly evoking the feeling of “all other mountains appearing small.”

Shicheng Mountain in Baiyun Scenic Area is rugged and craggy, towering and majestic, with steep cliffs standing like a natural barrier blocking the eastern side of the scenic area. Together with Jinsheng Mountain, Huangguang Mountain, and others, it encircles Baiyun Scenic Area. At the foot of the mountain, there are overlapping ridges, lush greenery, and numerous uniquely shaped rock formations such as the Stone Turtle, General Rock, Clam Rock, Horse-Mounting Stone, and Immortal’s Footprint. These formations are strikingly lifelike, as if crafted by the hands of gods, inspiring awe at nature’s transformative power, grandeur, and beauty.

The scenic area not only boasts majestic mountains and caves but also features numerous caverns such as Misha Cave, Xiaoyao Cave, Shuilián Cave, and Yanqiao Cave, each with distinct shapes and ever-changing forms. Xiaoyao Cave, according to legend, causes anyone who enters to feel sleepy within just five minutes — truly a place of carefree leisure, hence its name.

Baiyun Scenic Area offers not only mountains and caves but also waterfalls and streams. With its gentle waters, majestic peaks, and peculiar caves, the area allows visitors to experience a sense of grandeur, strength, and openness, while also appreciating the charm of crystal-clear springs and flowing streams. It also boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage, including ancient residences, temples, and beautiful historical legends and folk tales.

The Gexian Palace was built by villagers to express their gratitude to Ge Hong for his protection. Ge Hong (281–361 AD), a renowned alchemist of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and one of the founders of Taoism, expanded medical knowledge through alchemical practices. He authored the famous “Baopuzi,” both its Inner and Outer Chapters, making significant contributions to China’s medical field.
