Huxi Site

The Huxi Site is a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Unit.

Huxi Site. In 2010, archaeological experts from the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology discovered the Huxi Site in Yongkang City, located in central Zhejiang Province. After more than two years of investigation, they uncovered a significant amount of carbonized rice grains and rice spikelet bases dating back approximately 9,000 years. The latter is an important basis for distinguishing between wild rice and cultivated (domesticated) rice.

The spikelet base is the connection point between the rice grain and the small branch of the rice stem, serving as the base that supports the rice grain. Wild rice has the natural characteristic of shattering, so after the grain falls off, the contact surface of the spikelet base is smooth. However, cultivated rice, having lost this characteristic, requires manual threshing, leaving a “scar” on the contact surface of the spikelet base.

Among the rice spikelet bases unearthed at the Huxi Site, there are both those with smooth bases and those with “scarred” bases. This reflects the primitive features of early rice cultivation agriculture. They prove that during the Shangshan Culture period, when the Huxi Site was active, the ancestors of Zhejiang not only gathered wild rice but also began to domesticate and cultivate rice.

On January 13, 2017, it was announced as part of the sixth batch of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Units.
