Changshan National Geopark
Changshan National Geopark covers an area of 46 square kilometers, divided into four scenic areas: Sanqu Mountain, Golden Spike, Qingshi, and Changshan Port, with the Golden Spike area being its core.
In Earth's history, the 55-million-year period from 490 million to 435 million years ago is known as the Ordovician. This was the first time that life on Earth exhibited the richest biodiversity. Graptolites and conodonts, the main fossil groups used to define the Ordovician stratigraphic units, are best developed and preserved in the Huangnitang section of Changshan. In January 1998, the International Commission on Stratigraphy unanimously approved this section as China’s first “Golden Spike.”
