Wanan Bridge in Qujiang

Wanan Bridge is located east of Qiaotou Natural Village, Liandong Village, Lianhua Town, Qujiang District. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit in December 2009. Originally built as a stone slab bridge during the 27th year of the Shaoxing era of the Song Dynasty (1157), it was later destroyed by flooding. According to the Republican-era “Qu County Annals,” it was rebuilt in the 22nd year of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1757). The bridge runs east-west and spans the Zhixi River. The stairways on the east and west sides are each 10.5 meters long and 4.4 meters wide. The bridge has six piers and five arches, with the arch rings constructed using the longitudinal parallel segmented method. The original bridge deck was paved with granite slabs. The balusters and deck planks have been destroyed, and the stairways are no longer in their original form. The span of the arch rings is 13.4 meters, and the names of donors who contributed to the bridge’s construction are inscribed under the third arch. On both sides of the bridge are engraved in intaglio regular script the four characters “Wan’an Baoqiao” (Wanan Precious Bridge) and the eight characters “Fengtiao Yuushun, Guotai Min’an” (Fine Weather, Prosperous Country, Peaceful People).
