Nanjing Chishan

Chishan, formed by volcanic eruptions three million years ago from red sandstone, is also known as Zheshan or Danshan, among other names. With an elevation of 288.9 meters and covering an area of 4.2 square kilometers, it features dense pine and bamboo forests, babbling springs and streams, drifting sea of clouds at the mountaintop, and a pleasant climate. The temperature varies by 3–5°C between higher and lower elevations, and the area enjoys well-connected road and water transport networks. A 20-kilometer highway leading to Lukou International Airport runs right beneath the mountain. It lies 16 kilometers from Jurong City, 30 kilometers from Nanjing, with the Qinhuai River and Jurong River winding around the mountain from east to west. In ancient times, it was the site of one of Nanjing’s famed Eight Scenic Spots — “Chishan Reflecting Snow.” Today, it has become a distinctive leisure and tourism destination in the southern suburbs of Nanjing, integrating forest, cultural, natural landscapes, and religious culture.
