The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom architecture and murals in Luolang Lane are located at No. 17, Luolang Lane, Nanjing, and are designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province. The building is situated within the site of the former Eastern Palace of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Originally, there were three courtyards of single-story houses; currently, only the second courtyard remains, featuring a three-bay width. Both the main beams and the secondary beams are adorned with carved patterns, and the walls on the south, north, and west sides are painted. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom murals in Luolang Lane were discovered in October 1955 when a household registration officer from Houjiaqiao Police Station in Jianye District, Nanjing, noticed faint reddish-brown spots on the plaster of the right wall of the main hall at No. 17, Luolang Lane, where the surface plaster had peeled off. Having visited the nearby Tangzi Street murals, both he and local residents wondered if covered Taiping Heavenly Kingdom murals might also be present here. Excited, they carefully scraped away a small portion of the surface plaster, revealing leaf-shaped patterns. In total, nine murals were discovered, each measuring over two meters in both length and width. The subjects depicted include flowers, birds, and animals. Though the artwork has naturally deteriorated significantly, it demonstrates a high artistic level and appeals to both refined and popular tastes. Among them, the identifiable “Three Dogs Fighting,” “Pine and Crane,” and “Two Birds on a Willow Tree” possess considerable artistic and research value concerning the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.
