Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was founded in October 1952 as one of the first aviation higher education institutions established independently in New China. In 1978, it was designated as a national key university by the State Council; in 1981, it became one of the first universities authorized to confer doctoral degrees with the approval of the State Council; in 1996, it joined the national “211 Project”; in 2000, the Graduate School was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education; in 2011, it became a key construction university under the “985 Project Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines.” The university is currently under the administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In December 2012, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Civil Aviation Administration of China signed an agreement to jointly support the development of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Over more than 60 years of development, NUAA has upheld the educational tradition of “serving the country through aviation,” adhered to the fine school spirit of “unity, frugality, pragmatism, and innovation,” practiced the motto of “wisdom encompasses all things, and principles benefit the world,” and forged ahead through challenges, continuously promoting rapid growth. Today, the university has evolved into a research-oriented institution characterized by a focus on engineering, integration of science and engineering, and coordinated development across multiple disciplines including engineering, science, economics, management, and humanities, with distinctive features in aeronautics, astronautics, and civil aviation. During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, it was awarded the title of “Outstanding University” in the Educational Quality Improvement Project by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The university currently has 16 colleges and 147 research institutions. It hosts one State Key Laboratory, one National Defense Science and Technology Key Laboratory, one National Defense Science and Technology Industry Technology Research and Application Center, one National Cultural Industry Research Center, two National Teaching Bases for Fundamental Courses in Engineering, and four National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers. It offers 54 undergraduate programs, 34 first-level master’s degree authorization points, 16 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, and 16 postdoctoral research stations. It has two first-level national key disciplines—Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology, and Mechanics—nine second-level national key disciplines, two national key (cultivation) disciplines, and seven national defense characteristic disciplines.
