Xuanjin Bridge

Xuanjin Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

Xuanjin Bridge is located on the west side of Xi’an Gate in Qinhuai District, Nanjing. It is a three-arch stone bridge originally built in the early Ming Dynasty and is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanjing. During the Ming Dynasty, the imperial city was constructed in the eastern part of Nanjing, so officials frequently used Xi’an Gate opposite Xuanjin Bridge for their daily access to and from the palace, making it a heavily trafficked thoroughfare at the time.

According to historical records, the original bridge railings of Xuanjin Bridge had a pair of stone lions at each end, but today only one remains. Nevertheless, a small section of the original railing preserved on the southeast side of the bridge is still extremely precious. Based on this surviving section, the railing was restored in 2001 using white marble in the Ming Dynasty style. The sturdy square capitals are adorned with lotus petal patterns, while the panels feature traditional vase decorations symbolizing “safe passage.” A roughly one-meter-wide pedestrian path runs along the river beneath the bridge, and the bridge piers are stepped—solid, robust, and highly artistic—with functions to prevent collision damage and slow down water flow.

On December 19, 2011, the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province designated it as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in the seventh batch.
