Nanjing Jiangnan Silk Culture Museum

Located at the foot of the Ming city wall, the Nanjing Jiangnan Silk Culture Museum is the first professional thematic museum in Nanjing to interpret Jiangnan silk culture from an aesthetic perspective. Since its official opening in May 2017, the museum has been dedicated to promoting sericulture and silk culture. Leveraging Nanjing’s distinctive silk cultural heritage, it delves into the meanings behind various exhibits and collections, using rich and diverse presentation methods to showcase the past and present of Jiangnan silk culture.

The museum features a permanent exhibition on silk culture — divided into four sections: “Silkworm & Mulberry: The Origins of Civilization,” “Silk Fashion: Radiant Elegance,” “Weaving History: The Prosperity of Southern Capitals,” and “Silk Road Imprints: Tracing Back to Nanjing.” Together, they offer a comprehensive introduction to the cultural and historical background, as well as the development journey, of silkworms, mulberry, and silk.

The Silk Museum regularly serves various audiences and has organized over 200 educational activities based on the five major silk crafts: “weaving, dyeing, painting, embroidery, and printing.” It also offers customized intangible cultural heritage tours, such as the “Silk Road Imprints: Tracing Back to Nanjing” summer camp exploring maritime silk road relics, and the “Discovering Jinling’s Intangible Heritage: Experiencing the Prosperity of Southern Capitals” cultural and museum-themed summer camp.

The museum has established several research groups centered around Jiangnan silk culture, collaborating closely with institutions such as the Nanjing Museum, the Municipal Archives, the Municipal Museum Consortium, local universities in Nanjing, industry practitioners, and academic leaders. These partnerships support flexible basic research, applied research, and development studies on related topics. Since its inception, the Jiangnan Silk Culture Museum has embraced the mission of “making culture accessible,” and has remained committed to the philosophy of “rigor, innovation, exploration, and accomplishment” in promoting China’s outstanding traditional culture.
