Guyuan Square

Guyuan Square is a large urban green space located in the center of the county town. Built in 1998 and designed by Beijing Jinghua Landscape Design Institute, it was constructed by the Yanqing County Municipal Management Committee. The square covers a total area of nearly 100,000 square meters and features a sunken, fully open layout. Situated in the heart of the county town, Guyuan Square was developed through the demolition and redevelopment of the old Dongguan village, involving the removal of over 300 households and more than 1,500 rooms. A large modern sculpture named “Guyuan Sentiment,” serving as a symbol of Yanqing, stands proudly at the center of the square. Towering and magnificent, it presents an imposing presence.

The sculpture is 20 meters tall and primarily consists of three Y-shaped forms, three human figures, and one spherical body. The “Y” represents the first letters of “Yanqing” in pinyin, standing for Yanqing itself. The three human figures together symbolize the 300,000 residents of Yanqing, and more broadly, all the people of Guyuan. These figures, forged in silver steel and depicted standing hand in hand, rise between the sky and the earth, representing the unity and dedication of the people of Guyuan in building their homeland. It also signifies their firm beliefs, steely will, and creative spirit. The spherical body appears to rise from the ground, with one side inlaid with a pattern of the Badaling Great Wall, highlighting Yanqing’s regional identity. It symbolizes the rise of Yanqing as a tourist satellite city, as well as the future and hope of Guyuan. At the same time, the naturally integrated sphere carries connotations of inclusiveness, signifying that the Guyuan art scene is winning broad space for survival and development through its wide-ranging inclusivity. Yanqing is moving towards openness and enlightenment. The base of the sculpture is engraved with an artistically styled “Guyuan” character, reflecting the memorial theme of both the sculpture and the square. The character “Guyuan” is unique to Yanqing and serves as a distinctive symbol representing the long history and culture of the Guyu River basin.

At the foot of the sculpture lies the square itself, covering a total area of 14,000 square meters, used for hosting large events and providing leisure space for residents. The ground of the square is paved with colorful square bricks, forming various patterns—some square, some round—showcasing unique design. The steps are built from granite, solid, heavy, and durable. Below the sculpture is an automatic fountain, while on the north side of the square there are three cascading fountains equipped with 190 colored fountain lights. The surrounding area of the square is landscaped across 40,000 square meters, including 34,000 square meters of lawn and 5,000 square meters of flower beds. The green grass and blooming flowers surround the square, making the sculpture appear even more majestic and the square more serene and expansive. When night falls, residents and visitors gather here spontaneously. As the lights come on and colorful lamps twinkle, the fountains spurt and flow, rising and falling, their heights varying. The square shimmers under the colored lights, radiating splendor and a kaleidoscope of colors, exuding the refined and enchanting charm of this famous suburban city.
