The "8-Hour Challenge" 2012 Charity Hiking Challenge, jointly organized by the China Youth Development Foundation and the Beijing News, and co-organized by the Communist Youth League Yanqing County Committee and Operation Blessing Hong Kong, has begun recruitment. This event aims to mobilize social forces, spread public welfare, raise funds, and support rural primary schools in central and western regions to carry out the "Project Hope Joyful Reading" program, thereby improving students' reading abilities. On September 8, 2012, over a thousand caring individuals will gather at the YuDu Mountain Scenic Area in Yanqing to put the power of walking into practice for the cause of public welfare.
As people's living standards continue to improve, sports have evolved from mere competitive events to an essential element of a healthy lifestyle and a way to experience modern trends. The positive, self-challenging, teamwork, and striving spirit promoted in sports resonate deeply with the humanistic care, love, and willingness to help others embodied in public welfare. Using fashionable and fun outdoor activities to practice compassion, inspire others, realize dreams — this is one of the best models for public participation in charity.
The "8-Hour Challenge" aims to build a new model of social participation that combines sports with public welfare through a moderately challenging outdoor walking activity, mobilizing social forces to donate to projects such as Project Hope. The funds raised in 2012 will be used to implement "Project Hope Joyful Reading" in rural primary schools in Haiyuan County, Ningxia; Longyang District, Baoshan, Yunnan; and Yanqing County, Beijing. The initiative includes donating quality children’s books, training rural reading teachers, and helping students engage in leveled reading, whole-class shared reading, and reading sharing.
The "8-Hour Challenge" event spans three months and consists of two phases: pre-registration and on-site competition. All participants must promote the concept of public welfare and raise a certain amount of donations during the pre-registration phase. The on-site competition offers two routes: 40 kilometers and 25 kilometers. Participants can choose one based on their personal ability and complete the course within eight hours, challenging their physical limits.
Participants can register individually or as a four-person team (self-formed or organized by companies/institutions). Both routes have been designed and surveyed multiple times by outdoor sports experts, featuring beautiful scenery and suitability for outdoor cross-country challenges. Safety facilities along the route include checkpoints, supply stations, rescue vehicles, and support teams, ensuring participants are well-supplied and secure. This event organically combines elements of leisure, competition, environmentalism, teamwork, and charitable contribution, aiming to provide participants with an unforgettable experience that benefits both health and the spirit.
A standout highlight of this charity event is encouraging participants to promote the concept of public welfare through their own influence and actions, motivating family and friends to join and support them. Participants are invited to enjoy a soul-enriching journey of fundraising and walking. Since its launch on Sina Weibo on June 11, the "8-Hour Challenge" has received enthusiastic responses from numerous netizens. Caring users such as @YuMengMenghlr and @XiaXue5102 shared their participation and fundraising efforts via QQ, Weibo, and Renren, receiving generous donations. Charitable enterprises such as Beijing New Yansha Commercial Co., Ltd. and Noah Asset Management Co., Ltd. organized employee teams to participate, highlighting corporate social responsibility while actively promoting team-building and corporate culture.
This event has received strong support from numerous companies and institutions. FAW Mazda donated to cover operational expenses; Kraft Foods China provided biscuits and chocolate for replenishment; Shenzhen Ezon Electronics Co., Ltd. sponsored some prizes; outdoor platforms such as Lvye.com, Renren.com, Baidu Public Welfare, Sina Leju, Sina Outdoor, Sina Weibo, and TianGong.com provided extensive publicity; and organizations including JD.com, CYTS, Wanbu Network, and Longqing Gorge helped recruit participants and provided event venues.
As a co-organizer of the "8-Hour Challenge" Charity Hiking Challenge, the Beijing News will take on greater media social responsibility by promoting and spreading the innovative concept of fundraising through walking. Leveraging its media strengths, the Beijing News will use vivid stories and in-depth reports to introduce readers to the lack of extracurricular reading materials among children in impoverished areas, calling on all sectors of society and readers to take action. Through the power of walking, help rural children read more, read better, and grow up happily with the joy of reading.
