The cliff inscriptions on Shipan Mountain are a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The cliff inscriptions on Shipan Mountain are located on Shipan Mountain in Quyang Subdistrict, Haizhou District, Lianyungang City. There are numerous stone carvings on Shipan Mountain, totaling 29 in all. These include a Jin Dynasty inscription titled “Record of the Newly Constructed Mountain Path,” Ming Dynasty inscriptions such as “Liao Shizhao’s Inscription,” “Little Nine Turns,” Wang Tong’s “Noble Deeds and Clear Virtue,” Qing Dynasty inscriptions such as “Wu Tinghan’s Poetic Carving,” “Wang Xianqian’s Inscription,” “Shi Liangcai’s Inscription,” as well as undated inscriptions like “Ten Thousand Flower Rock,” “Brocade Rock,” and “Reading Spot of Shi Manqing.” There are also steles from the Ming Dynasty, including the “Weiyen Stele” and the “Steles in Memory of Prefect Zhang.”

The calligraphy styles of the Shipan Mountain inscriptions include seal, clerical, regular, and running scripts, each demonstrating remarkable skill. Many of the inscriptions describe the shapes of the rocks, blending the scenery with the texts to create an even more captivating experience. These carvings serve as important materials for the study of Haizhou’s history, geography, and calligraphy art since the Ming and Qing dynasties. They were designated as part of the third batch of cultural relic protection units of Jiangsu Province in 1982.

Protection Scope:

East to the eastern gully of Shipan Mountain, south to the southern gully of Shipan Mountain, west to the western gully of Shipan Mountain, and north to the southern dam of Wangzhuang Reservoir.

Construction Control Zone:

East to the 75.5-meter contour line, south to the 124.5-meter contour line, west to the western gully of Shipan Mountain, and north to the southern dam of Wangzhuang Reservoir.
