Dragon Pool Cliff Carvings

The Dragon Pool Cliff Carvings are a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

The Dragon Pool Cliff Carvings are located about 100 meters southeast of Ma’er Peak at the summit of Jinping Mountain in Haizhou District, Lianyungang City, at an altitude of 429 meters. The Dragon Pool consists of two natural caves, upper and lower, which have been modified by human hands. The carvings are distributed on the rock faces inside and outside the upper cave. The Dragon Pool was a site where officials and commoners prayed for rain during the Song and Jin dynasties, and it remained a place of worship through the Qing dynasty. There are nine carvings in total, eight of which still have legible inscriptions—six from the Song dynasty, one from the Jin dynasty, and one from the Qing dynasty. The content of the carvings provides reliable physical evidence for the study of ancient Chinese history, particularly in the fields of ancient geography, meteorology, ecological environment, folklore, and calligraphy. They were designated as part of the fifth group of cultural heritage protection units of Jiangsu Province in 2002.

Protected Area:

Based on the entrance of the Dragon Pool Cave: east to 50 meters outside the cave entrance, south to 30 meters in front of the cave entrance, west to the edge of the TV station’s mountain-looping road, and north to the mountaintop above the cave entrance.
