Beneath the Zhaohai Pavilion lies a massive cliff inscription, carved in 1993 to commemorate the centenary of Mao Zedong’s birth. It reassembles a quote from Mao to — using his authentic handwriting: “The hometown of the Monkey King is in Yuntai Mountain, Xinhailian City.”

Between October 1955 and spring 1958, within just three years, Mao mentioned three times that the Huaguo Mountain here was the hometown of the Monkey King, drawing attention from provincial, regional, and municipal leaders as well as local residents. Through research and on-site investigation, it was confirmed that Mao’s judgment was highly accurate.
