Introduction

Sumawan Ecological Park is situated on Liandao Island in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province. The name “Sumawan” comes from the beautiful legend of General Su Ziheng from the late Ming Dynasty, who grazed horses on Yingyou Mountain. The area features dense, tranquil forests that encircle the exquisite Golden Beach. Venturing into the woods brings you to a hidden world where sunlight filters through the canopy, accompanied by the murmurs of streams and birdsongs. Staying in wooden cabins allows you to listen to the roaring waves at night and witness the sunrise over the sea at dawn, providing an authentic experience far from the hustle and bustle — as if in a world apart. At the southeastern corner of Sumawan Bay, nestled among three hills, there lies a natural huge rock that is 6 meters long and 1.5 meters high. The rock bears an inscription, which is a boundary marker from the Xinmang period of the Han Dynasty, delineating the border between Donghai Commandery and Langya Commandery. The inscription roughly states: “The boundary between Donghai’s Quxu and Langya’s Gu (pronounced 'Ju') is defined by the mountains — the region south of the hills belongs to Quxu, while the area north of the water belongs to Gu. Westward straight to Kuangqi, the divide between Quxu and Gu follows the high ridge of Gu. To the east, both extend boundlessly.” It was created on the first day of the fourth month in the fourth year of the JianGuo era (April 6th, 12 AD), under the order of the regional governor of Xuzhou. This stele, carved around 2,000 years ago, reflects the political reforms and various aspects such as economy, military, culture, and geographical environment during the Xinmang period. Many experts and scholars who have personally inspected it refer to it as a “national treasure.” Over the years, wind, sun, rain, and wave erosion have shaped a diverse array of uniquely shaped marine erosional landforms, making it a veritable “museum of marine erosion rocks,” some of which have even become totems worshipped by local fishermen as symbols of good fortune.
