Peacock Valley Scenic Area

The Peacock Valley Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Peacock Valley Scenic Area is located on the southern foothills of Yuntai Mountain in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, and is an important part of the nationally renowned Huaguo Mountain Scenic Area, a national-level scenic spot.

The Peacock Valley Scenic Area lies to the west of the Huaguo Mountain Scenic Area and to the east of the Yawan Scenic Area, Lianyungang Port, and Lian Island Beach. It is 15 kilometers east of the port and 12 kilometers west of the city center in Xinpu. The entire Peacock Valley Scenic Area covers an area of 4 square kilometers. One of its most remarkable features is the year-round flowing streams—snow-covered winter landscapes with hanging icicles in the cold, and rushing waterfalls with white cascades in the summer. In spring, flowers bloom everywhere, and in autumn, the hills are laden with fruit. The Peacock Valley Scenic Area is a recently developed natural mountain lake attraction, surrounded by pristine forests rarely frequented by humans. The area features undulating mountains, crisscrossing valleys, winding springs, waterfalls, and streams that converge and diverge unpredictably. It boasts the deepest and longest valley among the high mountains, with the widest point measuring 500 meters and the narrowest just 30 meters, and the valley floor is twisting, deep, and serene.

Within the scenic area, the Tangli Valley and the Laoyao Valley converge in a pattern resembling a peacock’s fanned tail, hence the name Peacock Lake. The natural landform presents a grand and well-arranged layout, naturally forming a “Three Mountains and One Lake” composition with “Qin-Han dynasty” rustic charm—where nearby mountains display vividly detailed ridgelines and distant ones are softly brushed across the water. The area is home to lush forests of over 200 rare and precious tree species from China and abroad, including American pines, metasequoias, the golden larch (one of the world’s four most famous ornamental trees), golden-inlaid jade bamboo, and phyllostachys bambusoides. With blooming mountain flowers and birdsong throughout the seasons, and fresh air in the woods, it serves as an ideal retreat for urban dwellers seeking tranquility and a return to nature. Once inside the mountains, it feels like stepping into a fairyland, earning it the reputation of being Jiangsu’s “Shangri-La” or a “paradise on earth.”
