The Black Turtle Stone Carving at Baigebaxian is located atop Baigebaxian Hill in Yuanyang Village, Quyang Subdistrict, Haizhou District. It was carved directly from the natural shape of the rock face. The carving stands 40 cm tall, 90 cm wide, and measures 186 cm in length overall. It depicts a turtle entwined with a snake in a playful pose. The carving technique used for the Black Turtle is the same as that seen in the round stone sculptures at Kongwangshan and the round stone toad—accordingly, the snake’s body lacks an incised abdominal line. Based on these features, the Black Turtle Stone Carving may date back to the late Eastern Han Dynasty. Such large-scale Han Dynasty stone carvings of the Black Turtle are rare and are considered one of the precious artistic treasures in ancient sculptural art. In 1982, it was designated as one of the first batch of cultural relics protection units in Lianyungang City.
