Ancient Fenghuang City Gate

The Ancient Fenghuang City Gate is a cultural relic protection unit of Lianyungang City.

The Ancient Fenghuang City Gate is located at the southern end of East Main Street in Nancheng Town, Xinpu District. The existing gate was restored in the 11th year of the Xianfeng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1861) by Huang Jinshao, the magistrate of Haizhou. The plaque above the gate bears the four characters “Ancient Fenghuang City,” each measuring 50 centimeters in diameter. The inscription above reads “Xianfeng Year of Xinyou,” and the signature below states “Huang Jinshao, Magistrate of Haizhou.” In 1958, Fenghuang City was demolished, but the gate remained. Due to severe water leakage, the gate was repaired in 1985 with funding allocated by the provincial government. The gate now measures 18.27 meters in east-west length and 6.14 meters in height. The archway inside the gate is 3 meters high and 8.11 meters long at the base. The total north-south length of the gate passage is 11.68 meters. The arched roof of the gate is constructed from large bricks, while the rest is built with stone. On the western side of the gate, there is a stone stairway leading up to the top of the gate. This structure holds certain value for the study of the early development and military significance of the Yuntai Mountain area. It was designated as part of the second batch of cultural relic protection units of Lianyungang City in 1993.
