Minzhu Road Republican-Era Architectural Complex

Minzhu Road in Haizhou District, Lianyungang City, is a century-old street featuring many buildings from the Republican Era, among which the well-preserved ones are located at 79-87 (odd numbers), 88, 93-103 (odd numbers), 98, 131, 155, 154-182 (even numbers), and No. 219.

The architecture reflects a blend of Chinese and Western styles, as well as a mix of traditional and modern elements, with no shortage of outstanding works. Various classical orders originated from Western classical architecture, and many buildings on Minzhu Road showcase this important Western architectural language in diverse forms. Roof designs also display Western architectural features; arched window and door styles are common, while the use of metal window decorations gives the buildings a Western flair. Most building bases feature diamond-patterned walls, lending the structures a robust and solid appearance. Additionally, unique designs are evident in the external balconies, outdoor staircases, skylights, and chimneys, with these techniques largely derived from Western architectural methods.

These buildings also retain some traditional Chinese architectural expressions, such as courtyards, dougong brackets under the eaves, halls, and courtyards in certain structures, all of which appear quaint and rich in local flavor. The old buildings on Minzhu Road hold significant historical value for the study of the opening of Xinpu and modern architectural art.

In 2010, it was designated as part of the fourth batch of cultural relic protection units in Lianyungang City.
