Jingqin Academy is a cultural heritage site protected by Lianyungang City.

Jingqin Academy

Located on Zhongzheng East Street in Banpu Town, Haizhou District, Lianyungang City. It was built in the 25th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1899). The academy has produced many notable alumni and enjoys a certain level of fame both domestically and internationally.

The founders of Jingqin Academy were Bao Yudong, then the local magistrate of Haizhou, Peng Jiaqi, the Salt Transport Commissioner of Huaibei, and Chen Rufen, the Salt Officer of Zhongzheng Market. The name of the academy is derived from Han Yu’s “On the Role of Education”: “Skill comes from diligence, ruin from idleness; achievement from reflection, destruction from thoughtlessness.” The academy was housed in the Wenchang Palace, with Chen Rufen serving as its first headmaster.

During the Anti-Japanese War, Jingqin Academy was bombed, resulting in the destruction of classrooms and the looting of school property. After the victory of the war, the school buildings were restored and renamed Zhongzheng Central Primary School. After 1948, the name “Jingqin Primary School” was reinstated. In 1970, the school was renamed “Guanyun County Jihong Primary School” by the Guanyun County Party Committee and the County Revolutionary Committee in honor of Ye Jigui, a student who sacrificed his life saving a drowning child named Zhang Guixiang. In 1983, considering historical significance and influence, the county government restored the original name “Jingqin Primary School.”

The main structure of the academy is in the hip-and-gable roof style. Stone inscriptions within the academy include “Jingqin Academy,” “Jingqin School,” “Wenchang Palace,” “Skill Comes from Diligence,” and “Reiteration of Prohibitions.” Some relics from the former Bian Geng Memorial Hall are also preserved here.

In 2010, it was announced as part of the fourth batch of cultural heritage sites protected by Lianyungang City.
