Located on East Street, West Horizontal Street, and other areas of Nancheng Subdistrict, Haizhou District, Lianyungang City, there are currently twenty-one well-preserved ancient houses. Most of them are situated along both sides of East Street (formerly known as Phoenix Street or Haining Street), specifically at No. 10-2, 12-1, 20, 27, 29, 30, 32, 33, 39-2, 44, 46, 61, 73, 76, 80, 82, 85, 88, 104, 106 of East Street, Nancheng Town, Xinpu District, and No. 7 of West Horizontal Street. Some feature blue bricks and gray tiles with bracketed eaves, but most are built with slab stones, showcasing distinctive construction techniques. Each courtyard has a modest façade, but the interior space is quite expansive, often featuring two or three connecting halls or three to five courtyards, reflecting the charm of traditional Jiangnan-style residential architecture.

To the right of the main room in each courtyard stands a “Tianxiang Pavilion,” where plaques honoring “Heaven, Earth, Sovereign, Kin, and Teachers” are enshrined. The walls on either side of the main rooms are decorated with various auspicious patterns made from lime plaster. The overall architecture retains the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The ancient residential buildings in Nancheng hold significant reference value for the study of commercial trade, town planning, and architectural art during the Ming and Qing periods.

In 2010, they were designated as part of the fourth batch of cultural heritage protection units in Lianyungang City.

A five-meter buffer zone around the exterior walls of each individual ancient residence.

Construction Control Zone:

A ten-meter buffer zone around the exterior walls of each individual ancient residence.

Nancheng Subdistrict: Following the 2013 administrative division adjustment, Nancheng Town was abolished and re-established as Nancheng Subdistrict Office.
